It was four o’clock in the afternoon on a scorching hot Sunday. The sun was right above my head, hitting its sizzling rays constantly.
My mom, dad, grandfather, cousin, baby brother, and I were walking right on 1100 Congress Avenue right in front of the Texas State Capitol.
By that wonderful sight, I was amazed to see its massive and sturdy structure. Each brick in that historical landmark shows every Texan’s hard work into building this paradise.
Workers had finished this work of art on December 8, 1888, six years and ten months before they started to build it.
My family and I went inside to see the inside of the grand building that was recognized as a majestic building taller than The White House!
As we entered, we could see photos of current and past senators and congressmen of each city and statue of Sam Houston. But, we first had to go through heavy and thorough security.
The guards checked our devices and bags and double-checked my family and I, too. We finally were granted permission to look around the monument. I walked ahead to see a grand floor with a huge metal star on the bottom with “TEXAS” written above it below my feet with six flags surrounding the word. Then, I looked above to see three more stories up there, and people looking down and smiling at their families for pictures.
I could see detailing glass art above the rooftop, and on top of the glass, outside, was a statue which was the Goddess of Liberty. She was sculpted by Elijah E. Myers. I was mesmerized by the sight, but looked back to find my parents.
I quickly ran back to where we all got security checks to see my parents with my baby brother. I tugged my dad’s shoulder, begging him to take me onto the highest level to take pictures and explore. He nodded his head and we both climbed up the many staircases up all the way to the second story. I kept going up onto the second story, but my dad stopped me and pointed towards a room with a bold, massive heading, “House of Representatives”
I held my dad’s hand and we both walked into the room. As we went in, I could see huge chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and rows and rows of desks leading to the seat of the current speaker. Next to the seat, was the U.S. flag as well as the Texas flag waving low. Then, above the seat, was a digital bulletin board that said,
“WELCOME TO THE
TEXAS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
SPEAKER DADE PHELAN”
I looked above the board to see more rows of seats for congressmen and a wooden railing. I looked around to suddenly see a frame of past congressmen and their district and county they served within Texas. I looked to see lots of names that belonged to important people to the state. The people who worked in this monument; the Texas Legislature and Governor of Texas (Greg Abott) were very important to the state of Texas as well as very much appreciated.
After we looked around, my dad and I came out of the room and went up to the fourth story, after climbing millions of stairs. We went up against the sturdy railing and looked down to see tiny dots, resembling people. I finally saw a dot, which was my mom, and a tinier dot which I supposed was my baby brother running around everywhere. I tapped my dad and asked him to take a photo of me, and he did, as I grinned widely. We finally went down to the very bottom floor to come out of the building. We looked around for my cousin and grandpa, and when we found them, we exited the building.
I once again turned around to the Texas Capitol, to see the statues and frames. I stayed like that for a moment, until my mom yelled, “Come on!” I ran behind them to my sweet home.
Very good narration and detailed information. Keep it up.
